Vat Savitri Vrat Katha (Story)
Myth has it that the ruler of Madra Kingdom, King Ashvapati & his queen, who were childless, dedicatedly performed a puja in glory of Sun God Savitri on a sage’s advice. Pleased with devotion of the duo, the god blessed them with a girl kid, who was named Savitri to mark the god.
Unable to find a worthy match for his daughter, the king asked Savitri to look for a husband for herself. While looking a potential match, Savitri met the son of the exiled blind King Dyumatsena, Satyavan. When she declared her decision to her father, Narad Muni get involved with the forecast that Satyavan, whom she has selected to be her husband, would die within a year & would not be bestowed with life on earth beyond that period.

When all try to coax Savitri to rethink the decision failed, King Asvapati give in to his daughter’s will. After marrying Satyavan, Savitri moved to the forest with her husband where he reside with his parents. She gave up her royal regalia & fit for her own temperament & in keeping with her husband’s life, chose to live like a recluse.
3 days before the day of calculation neared, Savitri began fasting & then followed her husband to the forest on the said day. Yama, the lord of death, reached to get back Satyavan’s soul. As per to myth, Savitri kept following Lord Yama & rejected to give up her run after. She followed Yama for 3 day & nights, after which Yama yield & asked Savitri to wish for anything but Satyavan’s life.
After being allowed the 1st & the 2nd wishes — to restore her father-in-laws’ kingdom & his eyesight — she carry o with to follow Yama. The lord of death asked her to explore another one, anything but the life of her husband. Savitri asked for a hundred children with Satyavan, leading to a dilemma for Yama. have an impact on by the young woman’s commitment for her husband, Yama confer on allowed her Satyavan’s life.

Rituals of Vat Savitri Vrat
- Women take a sacred bath before sunrise with Amla (Indian gooseberry) & til (sesame seeds) & get dressed in clean clothes. They apply vermillion & wear bangles — accessories synonymous with a married woman — pledging a nirjala (no water intake) vrat.
- Devotees consume the roots of the Vat (Banyan) tree & if the vrat lasts for 3 consecutive days, they eat the same with water.
- After giving prayers to the Vat tree, they tie a red or yellow colored holy thread around its trunk.
- Women give rice, flowers & water to the banyan tree and perform Parikrama (take rounds) of the tree while saying aloud prayers.
- If a banyan tree isn’t obtainable, devotees can make a portrait of the tree with the assist of sandalwood paste. Or turmeric on a wooden base to perform the customs in a similar method.
- Pilgrims are as well required to make special dishes & good food on the day of Vat Savitri. Once puja finish, prasad is giving out among all family members.
