The story & significance of Nirjala ekadashi originate from the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. The vrat katha dates back to the conversation between Bhima (one of the 5 Pandava brothers in the Hindu epic Mahabharata) & Sage Vyasa, where the sage describes the importance of marking vrat on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi.
