Vrat Katha of Apara Ekadashi

Many of years ago, there lived a kind, generous king named Mahidhwaj. He had a young brother, the savage, unrighteous & unjust Brajdhwaj, who was ruled by envy & desire of the King. Brajdhwaj was always in the mood to hurt his brother. One day, being driven by hate & bitter bitterness, Brajdhwaj seized an opportunity to kill King Mahidhwaj & hide his body at the foot of a wild Peepal tree.

Following his ruthless, mistimed death, the king took the form of an rowdy ghost, doing hustle-bustles from the Peepal tree. One day, Dhaumya Rishi, who passed by the tree, sought to know the life story of the ghost with his knowledge & tapobal (knowledge achieved by asceticism) & asked him to come down from the tree. When the ghost climbed down, Dhaumya Rishi asked a few questions:

“How did you become a ghost?”

“Can not say, Munivar!” answered the ghost with folded hands. “The acts of your last birth weren’t right. For those offence, you’re brutally murdered a& d have become a ghost. Will you honor my word?”

“Your word is my order, Munivar!” “You must make a vow.” “Which one?” asked the ghost.

“Mark the Achala Ekadashi vrat on the Ekadashi of Jyeshtha Krishna Paksha,” recommended the Munishwar.

“As you say, Munivar”

“With the result of this fast, you shall arrive at freedom from the ghost form.”

“I am in your debt for you’ve mercy on me, a offender.” King Mahidhwaj said.

Mahidhwaj fasted on Achala Ekadashi & heed sage Dhaumya. He did & achieved the divine body, so leaving the phantom form. His vrat during the Ekadashi discharge his past act & he was allowing a place in heaven.

Rituals of Apara Ekadashi

Puja: The onlooker of Apara Ekadashi requires to take special care of the puja. The puja should be performed before the sunset. All the rituals must perform with full loyalty & dedication. The observer of this fast should get up before sunrise & take bath. The pilgrims then give Tulsi leaves, flowers, dhoop & lamp to Lord Vishnu. Sweets are preparing for this event & given to the lord. The pilgrims as well visit temples of Lord Vishnu, in the evening.

Fasting: The vrat of this ekadashi starts on the ‘dashami’ (10th day). Some of the observer keep strict fast & spend the day without eating or drinking anything. Partial vrat can as well be kept for those who are unfit to mark strict fast. They can then consume ‘falahar’ all day. The fast begins from sunrise & ends on the sunrise of the ‘dwadashi’ (12th day). On the day of Apara Ekadashi eating of all types of grains & rice is prohibiting for all. Applying oil on body is as well not permitted.
