The goddess Meenakshi is the main god of the shrine, unlike most Shiva shrines in South India where Shiva is the major god. As per the Tamil text Tiruvilaiyatarpuranam, King Malayadwaja Pandya & his wife Kanchanamalai organized a Yajna getting a son for succession. As an alternative, a daughter was born out of the fire who was already 3 years old & had 3 breasts.
Shiva intervened & said that the parents should treat her like a son & when she meets her husband, she will lose the 3rd breast. They followed the advice. The girl grew up, the king crowned her as the successor & when she met Shiva, his words came true, she took her true form of Meenakshi.
