According to Hindu myth, the demon king Surapadman, once got boons from the god Shiva on account of severe atonement. He began ruling the world on account of the power attained. He wed Padumakomalai & had many sons. Viramkendiram, a city made in the seas, became his capital & he began troubling the devas (the gods). He imprisoned Indra (the king of the gods) and as well desired Indra’s wife Indrani.
Indra sought the assist of Shiva’s son & the god of war Murugan. Murugan sent his messenger Viravakutevar to the devil, who remained unmoved. Surapadman hid under the sea. Murugan split him into 2 pieces, which went on to become the god’s universe vehicles, peacock & rooster.
