History of Chaturshringi Temple
The Chaturshringi Temple has a rich origin that goes back to the era of the Peshwas, approximate 250 years ago. As per the myths, a wealthy money lender & mint owner Durlabhsheth Pitambardas Mahajan was the owner of this holy temple in Pune. He was a most religious person & devoted to Devi Saptashrungi. Each year during the full moon day of Chaitra, he used to venture to the hills of Vani (near Nasik), which is approximate 300 km from Pune, to visit the temple of Devi Saptashrungi.
But, due to old age, Durlabhsheth stopped visiting Vani to revere the goddess after a few years. It was a great sorrow to him that he was unable to venture. Because of his true devotion, deep sadness & prayers, the goddess came in his dream & recommended to him to visit the North-West of Pune & bring her icon so she could be near her pilgrims. And to fulfill the Goddess’ command, Durlabhsheth went to the referred to place & miraculously he found the statue of the goddess.
Out of gratitude and happiness, Durlabhsheth founded a shrines at the same place where he found the icon. And this way, it became the origin story of one of the oldest shrine in Pune. Subsequently, the shrine was modernize from time to time. And presently, it is keeping by Shri Devi Chaturshringi Mandir Trust.
