History of Ekambareswarar Temple

This earliest temple was rebuilt by Pallavas, Cholas & then by Krishna Deva Raya of the Vijayanagar dynasty during 1509–1529 AD. Raja Gopuram (Temple Tower) is 57 metres high, one of the tallest towers in South India. This shrine has 5 spacious corridors (prakarams) & a beautiful 1000-pillared hall (Aayiram Kaal Mandap). This temple has 1008 Shiva Lingas. Temple Tank Kampai Tirtha is faith to have an underground sacred river & is situating right opposite the shrine.

The Sri Chakra in this shrine was installing by Adhi Sankaracharya, having 34 Trikonas (triangles). This chakra is made out of 8 herbals whooped Astagandham. Abhishekam will not be organized on this chakra. Pooja will conduct with sandals & other cosmetic powders & archana with Kumkum. On the day of Vijayadashami during the Navarathri occasion, this chakra will cover with gold & silver on all other days.
