Kerala Motor Vehicles Department

How to Get Vehicle Registration in Kerala (KL)?

Temporary Registration

Permanent Registration
According to section 39 included in Motor Vehicle Act 1988, it is mandatory for each new vehicle to register in relevant RTO. Vehicle registration is an easy method and one can apply for RC to RTO with Form 20 & other documents within 7 days of the buy of the vehicle.
Ownership Transfer
The RC transfer is an easy process that can done at the relevant RTO office or at the Kerala RTO Website. This is completing when the vehicle is sold or acquired at a public auction. For this one requires to apply for RC transfer at the RTO office with documents including Forms no. 29, 30, original vehicle registration, NOC, vehicle insurance document, etc.
Ownership transfer to another state
When ownership of a vehicle is to transfer from Kerala to another state, the owner requires to get a NOC from the relevant RTO office. Transfer of RC in case of death
In case of the death of the owner of the vehicle, the lawful successor has to intimate the registration authority. After which he requires to apply for RC transfer within 30 days of the demise. He can apply with documents like death certificate, succession certificate, Form 31, etc.
Renewal of Registration
Registration certificate for any vehicle is applicable for only 15 years after which the owner requires to renew the RC. For renewal of vehicle registration, the owner can apply to the RTO office with documents like Form no. 25, RC, insurance document, etc. The process includes inspection of the vehicle before the renewal of the registration certificate.
Duplicate Registration
If due to any reason the original registration copy is destroyed, misplaced or lost, it is possible to get a duplicate RC. For this, the owner requires to lodge a complaint in the concerned police station. After this, he/she can avail another copy by approaching the RTO authority. Here he requires to apply with Form no. 26, police certificate, vehicle insurance document, etc.
